The Bare Essentials Of Car Rental

February 23, 2012 by

For people who are only renting a car for the first time, there can be several challenges involved. Admit it, if you’re a first-time car renter, you know how it feels to be in a quandary, not quite sure whether you’ve stumbled upon a great deal or a great pretender of a rental company. Hesitant to do your research when others can find a good deal like finding the back of their hand? Fret not, because even if this is not your first time to rent a car, that would not exempt you from doing your homework and researching on the best possible car rental arrangement — yes, this applies for everybody!

Insurance is a classic example of this. One must be familiar with the four basic types of insurance, and these are collision damage waiver (CDW)/loss damage waiver (LDW), supplemental liability insurance, personal accident insurance, and personal effects coverage, and these types shall quickly be discussed hereafter. You may have heard car rental companies pitch CDW and/or theft insurance and try convincing you to make the right decision, or so they say. Here’s some neat nice-to-know information — neither option is mandatory, despite the attractive pitches. Before investing a good fifteen dollars a day (at least) for such options, you want to see whether rentals are covered by your standard auto insurance. Also ascertain what the policies are on your credit card for rentals. Payment on credit card is usually a prerequisite for car rental companies. Companies often levy charges for “damages” after the fact if the reason is valid, and this would be their method of doing so. Interesting sidebar — we advise you to NEVER USE A DEBIT CARD FOR SUCH A PURCHASE!!! If you find yourself suckered into a bad deal, there will be no opportunity for you to contest the spurious charges. Be sure that the credit card you are using is legitimate. Since using a valid credit card is a prerequisite, check whether your credit card offers automatic insurance coverage provided the rental is charged to the card you are planning to use.

The next major rip-off is the fuel purchase option. The concept behind this stratagem is you would be paying for a full tank of gasoline ahead of time, then return the vehicle on empty. What you would want to do instead is fill ‘er up right before returning the vehicle and prior to renting the car, decline said offer politely because there is a very, VERY slim chance you will be using all that gas in the full tank anyway. You’re only paying for the gas you have used this way. But if you say ‘yes’ to the fuel purchase option, you may be spending more than you would if you gas up as you go.

Not only are there a plenitude of ‘secret’ charges, a lot of rental companies will only allow somebody aged twenty-five or even older rent a vehicle. There are some firms that allow people aged twenty-one and above to rent a car, but will tack on a surcharge of ten to twenty dollars a day. In addition, the only person covered under these types of insurance would be the person renting the car, so you will still be culpable if a ‘homie’ of yours wrecks the car that you rented.

As an aside, local taxes might stick a fork in your plans. With the internet, it can be easy to search out the most expensive and least expensive cities and to plan your rental accordingly. At the end of the day, research will be your best friend and your ONLY friend in terms of making the most out of your car rental, as well as any other endeavor for that matter.
